A Guide to Healthy Living for Seniors.

We hope this guide to healthy living for seniors will provide advice on a healthy nutrition and exercise regime that will benefit  the baby boomer generation.

Why is it important to lead a healthy living lifestyle and ensure that you exercise regularly and remain fit once we get beyond the magical age of 55? The answer really is quite simple. All one has to do is to look at the news on television or read the papers and you see or hear headlines warning us that more and more people are becoming obese. Have you ever asked yourself why this is? In its simplest form many people eat too much convenience food and never exercise. Their lifestyle does not involve healthy living and there is no way they can be described as fit. Do you really want to be like them?

So, you may be asking yourself, what does healthy living involve?

First and foremost healthy living requires you to stop eating convenience and fast foods and replace them with home cooked food. (Just like your mother prepared!) Secondly healthy living requires portion control on the size of the meal that you are going to eat. This is the first step in avoiding obesity which  may lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes. The third point to take in to consideration is your fat intake. The body needs fat to function. However someone who has adopted a healthy living lifestyle will ditch bad fats; saturated fats; and replace them with poly and mono saturated fats such as olive oil and omega 3 oil. Healthy living entails enjoyment of the little treats in life, such as wine with a meal, a cream cake or ice cream, chocolate but in moderation.

Healthy living also entails us participating in exercise. Exercise is important because if we want to avoid becoming obese, then we need to expend more energy than we take in. The easiest way to do this is through a regular exercise regime. Exercise can take many forms ranging from ballroom dancing to swimming or weight lifting to rambling and cycling. The important thing is to ensure that through exercise we burn more calories than we consume. Exercise isn’t strolling to the newsagent on a Sunday morning. To exercise properly you need to exercise the most important muscle in your body, your heart, by increasing your heartbeat by undertaking strenuous exercise. Depending on your hobbies or attitude this could be strenuous walking, swimming, cycling, jogging, raking the lawn, or many other activities. Anything that will increase your heart rate. Remember to warm up first

Health Warning! If you have not undertaken any form of exercise for some time it is vital that you get medical clearance from your doctor before you commence your exercise regime.
